All About Perch

A picture of a perch

Perch are typically one of the easiest species of fish to catch as they are considered one of the most predictable types of fish. That is because perch tend to heavily follow their likes and dislikes and have mostly the same overall personality making it easier for you to predict what a perch might do. Perch really enjoy coolish water temperatures around 50-70F and tend to reside near shallow water edges near a large clump of weeds. For the general environment Perch prefer soft flats and do not enjoy rocky floors as much. For weather, perch really enjoy calm days with plenty of clouds and little wind as perch tend to dislike strong winds as well as direct sunlight. Another interesting thing to note about perch is that they tend to travel in groups so if you spot a perch nearby or catch one chances are there are more around. That makes things both easier and more difficult as if you can catch one you have a good chance of catching more, but if you scare a couple away it may scare the whole group away.

With all of this information about perch. The best season to go fishing for perch is in mid to late spring as the water will start to warm up a little but overall remain generally cold enough for the perch to most enjoy it. In mid to late spring as well most of the weeds will have either fully grown or are almost finished growing. That is an important thing to note when fishing for perch as perch tend to huddle around clumps of weeds for cover. When fishing for perch it is a good thing to keep in mind that they are opportunistic predators and only hunt when presented with a large open chance to do so. For bait, perch enjoy worms as well as minnows which they will snag when presented an opportunity. Most other normal bait and lures will work effectively however.
